Launceston City Deal

Launceston is Australia’s third oldest city, with a proud past and a bright future.

Signed in April 2017, the Launceston City Deal is a ten-year agreement between the Australian and Tasmanian Governments, and the City of Launceston, that will shape our city’s future, create jobs and generate economic growth for the region by building on our natural advantages.

The City Deal will position Launceston as one of Australia’s most liveable and innovative regional cities, with growing incomes and falling levels of disadvantage.

The three levels of government are working together with local partners and the community to achieve this shared vision with over $500 million already invested in identified priorities.

This will see our city become an even more vibrant place to live and work. The inner city is being revitalised with welcoming public spaces and new inner city housing and retail developments underpinned by virtual city modelling that will transform our city and regional planning.

This work is complemented by initiatives spanning education and employment, city planning and housing, digital innovation and sustainability.

Work is also underway on major projects including relocating the University of Tasmania campus to the inner city site of Inveresk and improvements to the health of the Tamar estuary.
